BOWMONT PARK |
|
Located in northwest Calgary and bordering the communities of Bowness, Varsity Estates and Silver Springs, Bowmont Park is a large natural area with many diverse features. Aspen groves lie along the river, while the bluffs above are arid prairie. Archaeological sites have been excavated along the cliffs, giving evidence that aboriginal peoples have visited and used the park for hundreds of years. Wildlife is often seen -- mule deer and coyotes are common.
Heavy human usage, particularly by dog owners and mountain bikers, has led to growing concerns about preserving its natural state. A number of groups have formed to promote its conservation.
The best times to visit are just after sunrise (better chance of seeing wildlife) and just before sundown (best photo opportunities).
Click on the index photos left to see enlarged versions. Most were shot just before sundown.
