You are now approaching the Eau Claire district with its unique indoor market. This site was originally occupied by the Eau Claire Lumber Company, which was established in 1886 and named after Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where the financial backers of the company lived. The company was managed by Peter Prince, who arrived in Calgary in 1886 with saw mill equipment and a staff of trained employees and their families. While most of the families settled on nearby Eau Claire Flats, Prince built a luxurious home a few blocks away. Some remnants of this early period of Calgary's history remain. The original building on the site is now a restaurant - the 1886 - on the west side of the market. Also the smoke stack seen in this view originated with the lumber mill. Prince's house now sits in Heritage Park, about a 20 minute drive south of this corner. Nearby Prince's Island also commemorates the lasting contributions of this early industrialist. Continue forward to access shops, restaurants and Eau Claire market, and ultimately the foot bridge to Prince's Island (named after Prince). To the left, beyond the Sheraton Suites hotel (left foreground in this view) lies Eau Claire Flats, now occupied by parking lots and condominium housing. Turn right to proceed east along 2nd Avenue to access the Eau Claire market or IMAX theatre by another entrance. |
