Calgary Downtown Tour Looking North at 8 Avenue and 4 Street SW

The exterior of the Holt Renfrew fashion store on the right is all that remains of Calgary's original Eaton's store. It once occupied the entire block and was designed by the same architects who designed the Eaton's store in Montreal. The store was known in its day for its elevators, with their glass doors that allowed little folks to watch the cables and pulleys haul the cars from floor to floor, and the escalators, the first in Calgary. The store was demolished in the late 1980's to make way for the Canada Trust Tower, seen rising in the background, and the rest of the Eaton's Centre development. The Eaton's store moved across the street to the left, a site it occupied until the demise of the Eaton's empire in 1999.
