Calgary Downtown Tour Looking East at 9 Avenue and 1 Street SW

This corner contrasts buildings with historical significance and the modern face of "big oil" in Calgary. The large building in the foreground is the Palliser Hotel, named after Captain John Palliser who visited the Calgary area in the late 1850's. Originally built between 1911 and 1914, three more floors and a penthouse were added in 1929, making it the tallest building in Calgary, a distinction it held until the 1960's.

Diagonally across the street (on the northwest corner) stands the Grain Exchange building. Built in 1910 of reinforced concrete and sandstone, it was Calgary's first skyscraper and "modern business building".

On the northeast corner, between these venerable "citizens", stands PanCanadian Plaza, a modern skyscraper and home of PanCanadian Petroleum Limited.

Continue forward to Centre Street and the Calgary Tower, turn right to pass under the CP Rail tracks and access the Beltline area, or turn left to go north into the heart of the downtown core.
