Calgary Downtown Tour Looking South at 6 Avenue and 1 Street SW

The Lougheed Building on the left is the subject of much discussion and debate between the local historical society, which wants to save it, and its present owner who wants to tear it down in order to redevelop the site.

Built in 1911 by Senator James Lougheed, the Lougheed consists primarily of offices on the upper floors and retail shops at ground level. It also houses the Grand Theatre (marquee visible in the photo) that was said to be one of the finest live theatres in North America in its day. Until it was converted to a cinema in 1937, the Grand saw many famous celebrities on its playbill, including Jack Benny, the Marx Brothers, Burns and Allen, and many more. The cinema was finally and permanently closed in late 1999.

It would be a shame to lose the Lougheed Building with its Grand Theatre to a wrecking ball. To join in the effort to save the building, check out this new website for additional information, early photos, contact lists and an on-line petition.
