Calgary Downtown Tour Looking South at 9 Avenue and 6 Street SW

Under the Plus 15 bridge we can see 9th ave and the carpark beyond. A train is passing on the CPR tracks, on its way to the Aylyth yards in southeast Calgary.

Over the rails is the Beltline district, starting at 10th ave. We used to have offices on 11th ave on what was then the notorious "Electric Avenue" - a collection of taverns and clubs located mainly between 5th St and 7th St. It was fairly tame by big city standards, but you wouldn't want to be there after midnight. But in the face of public pressure, the city began tightening things up, and many taverns have gone, leaving the area open to retail developments. We suspect that one legacy of that era is a large number of former partygoers with hearing and liver damage.
