Downtown Calgary contains many little gems of greenery and park space that are tucked in amongst the great expanses of concrete, steel, glass and sandstone. One example is the small park seen here, although its existence came about accidentally, and its permanence may still be questionable. Back in the early 1980's, development plans called for the construction of office towers of 42 and 64 storeys, comprising the First Canadian Centre on this block . The 42-storey western tower was completed, but the second, taller building was never built, largely due to the sharp downturn in oil prices and the local economy in 1982. Ian Weetman, who has supplied comments for some of our downtown views, writes: "...the foundation (for the second tower) is already in place, so only the tower itself needs to be added to the site".
