Pictured here is the Mewata Armoury. It was constructed in 1916 on the south east corner of Mewata Park, a popular civic recreation area of the day. The land was ultimately donated to the federal government. The armoury was designed to serve the specific needs of the infantry, and is home of some of Alberta's oldest regiments. Besides its use as a drill hall by cadet organizations, the armoury is also a popular site for public functions, such as charity bazaars. It is the only remaining building in the downtown core with a military past. Calgary's first professional football stadium (named Mewata Stadium), was located just behind this building (not visible in photo). Home of the Calgary Stampeders professional football club until the early 1960's, the stadium was later used for high school football, soccer and other sports until 1999, when construction started on "Millenium Park". One of the city's main millenium projects, Millenium Park will contain facilities for skateboarders, in-line skaters and x-cross bicycles. |
