Lions Festival of Lights - Additional Notes
|
BackgroundThis display originated in the front yard of George Alloro, a long time resident and electrician in Northwest Calgary. It's a minor point of debate as to what led George to end his yard display and donate his stuff to the city. It might have been that it simply outgrew George's yard (he added new props and lights every year). Perhaps it was traffic in front of his house that overflowed the small street where he lived every Christmas season. I can remember sitting in that line-up for hours, waiting for our turn to catch a quick (and too brief) glimpse of all the lights in his marvelous setup). Regardless, the city took over the display and moved it to Confederation Golf Course where it has continued to grow and shine forth every Christmas time for the past 20+ years, much to the delight of citizens and visitors alike. One sad note -- George Alloro passed away this past autumn. His lasting legacy to the city will be this glorious Christmas Festival of Lights that he started so many years ago. Sponsors
