Native People

A feature attraction of the stampede is the participation by Southern Alberta's aboriginal
peoples. Daily at Rope Square, members of the 5 tribes living near Calgary demonstrate
several dances in their culture, then invite onlookers to join them in
a "Circle" or "Friendship Dance" (on the day we attended, most children and many adults in the audience
gave it a try). Meanwhile an authentic Indian Village is located at the Stampede Grounds where the
tipis are open for inspection. Click an image to see its enlargement. More native village photos by Peter Reath. |
