| Underwood Block at 1311 to 1331 - 1st
St SW This red brick building was
built in 1911 by Thomas Underwood, an Alderman,
mayor and prominent member of the Baptist Union
of Western Canada. The upper floors were used for
offices and apartments, and the ground floor
housed businesses such as the Diamond Coal
Company. It is described in a City of Calgary
Heritage tour as "... Neo-classical with
prominent sandstone pilasters and pediments. The
small building to the south was used by Mr.
Underwood as his residence and offices.
We are standing across 1st Street looking
northwest at the block, which now houses a
restaurant, merchants, offices and apartments. (back)
