Kananaskis Country is a large Alberta Provincial Park located about an hour's drive west of Calgary in the Rocky Mountains. It's thick forest, consisting mainly of evergreens, has extensive trails for hikers and skiers of all levels of experience. It is well populated with birds and wild animals including bears and cougars, so it needs to be visited with respect and appropriate regard to mutual safety.

Nestled amongst the trees is a resort hotel complex called Kananaskis Village, and immediately south lies the Kananaskis Golf Course. The Village became a focus of attention when it was the location for a G8 summit conference in July 2002.

The nearest town is Canmore, a thriving community on the TransCanada Highway, a few minutes drive west of the Kananaskis exit. It is notable for the alpine design of the shops in its main streets, but all around are signs of a booming economy in the form of new sub-divisions, golf courses and tourist facilities. On the way to Canmore you pass Lac Des Arcs with its quarries and ore-processing plant.

It is possible to take the Kananaskis exit off the transCanada Highway and drive in a clockwise loop through the Park to Canmore, via Spray Lakes. Some facilities, such as the Golf Course, are well signposted, but you should get one of the published trail books, or a local map, to find the dozens of trail-heads. And check with the Warden's offices for information and safely warnings.
