Remembrance Day Pictures - Normal Enlargements

These pictures show scenes from the 2001 Remembrance Day ceremony at the Museum of the Regiments in southwest Calgary, Alberta, Canada. If your browser supports frames, these pictures are available in the Viewer for easier viewing.

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 2001, record crowds attended a moving remembrance service at several locations in Calgary. One could hardly fail to notice the symbolism of the children playing carefree on the tanks and other instruments of war, as the adults assembled to pay tribute to the veterans who gave so much to protect that freedom. The ceremony also reminded us of the gallant people who still risk their lives to keep us safe. A visit to the military museum in Calgary is highly recommended at any time of the year. The exhibits are well laid out and are surprisingly extensive. More importantly, we need to remind ourselves regularly that peace is not to be taken for granted.

This is an evening event with the infield and finish straight in shadow, making it a tricky race to photograph. Starting at 8:00pm there are nine heats of four wagons and sixteen outriders. Each heat starts in the infield as the wagons circle barrels before heading anticlockwise around the track. They complete one lap, finishing in front of the grandstand, (which is packed with about 17,000 people every night). The outriders can make or break the race, since they incur penalties for not finishing close to their wagon.
