This gallery of pictures, (19 thumbnails - 22 skaters' names), was assembled from images taken at the CanAM International Long Track event, held November 23-25, 2001 in the Olympic Oval on the University of Calgary Campus, Alberta, Canada.
It is interesting to compare these early images with those from later events. Over two years, as I gradually learned the techniques for photographing speed skaters, I increased the ISO settings (film speed) from 600 to 1600, and dropped the aperture setting to F2.8. Greater familiarity with the Oval lighting also enabled me to find optimum locations on the long and short track courses. Over the same period I learned new techniques for editing with Adobe Photoshop, and came to appreciate the importance of preparing images specifically for the Web.
Of equal significance was a growing awareness of the sport and the ability to anticipate movements. This led to shots with more than one skater in the frame, particularly in short track events - something that greatly increased my enjoyment of the images. See the differences yourself by going to my speed skating home page and looking at the later events.
