After the calf is released from an enclosed chute and crosses a scoreline, the rider accelerates from behind a barrier to catch up and lasso the calf as quickly as possible. The cowboy then runs to the calf, throws it over and binds any three legs with a rope tie that must hold for six seconds. During the binding of the calf's legs, the horse pulls the lasso rope taut around the calf's neck to keep it still.

There are several penalty situations, including 10 seconds for breaking the barrier too soon, disqualification for jerking the calf straight over backwards and a fine for unnecessary roughness. As for all events involving animals, the calf roping is observed by Special Constables representing the SPCA.
