The cowboy attempts to stay on the horse for eight seconds while using only one hand to grip a braided rope attached to his own saddle. He must have his feet over the break of the horse's shoulders until after the first jump out of the chute. Then he is able to slide his feet back and forth to counter-balance the bronc's movements. The rider may be disqualified for touching the horse or equipment with his free hand, losing a stirrup or being bucked off before the eight second count is over.
