After a steer is released from an enclosed chute and crosses a scoreline, the cowboy rides his horse from behind a barrier to catch up with the steer. An extra horse, ridden by a hazer, runs on the other side of the steer to keep it running straight. The cowboy then leans from his horse, grabs the steer by the tip of the horn and swings his legs forward to the ground to stop the steer.
The steer's head is twisted to throw the animal off balance and when the steer is flat on its side with all legs extended on the same side, the official time is taken. There is a 10 seconds penalty for breaking the starting barrier too soon.
